According to post by Chris Hornyak at Piki Geek, and of course Sony Online Entertainment, PlanetSide Next will now be known as PlanetSide 2! I didn’t even know that PlanetSide had a sequel planned, it’s like yay!
PlanetSide is a genre of it’s own kind, it’s an MMOFPS, a Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. PlanetSide was released back in 2003 and was in my opinion an excellent replacement for Star Siege: Tribes fans. Since the game is an MMO with servers and game support provided by Sony Online Entertainment, to play the game you have to subscribe to their services monthly.
For one, maps (or continents) will be 4km x 4km – which seems accurate, considering that is about the size of the current PlanetSide maps. Likewise, the slides point out that the continents will be diverse and have “distinct biospheres and unique gameplay areas.”
In other words, it looks like a lot of PlanetSide’s heart and soul is going to be carried over into the new game – which is good news for veterans of the MMOFPS.
Release date is set for sometime 2011, John Smedley originally said March 2011, but we know what a troll he can be (Give me back my Pre-NGE Star Wars: Galaxies and we’ll be on common ground again Mr. Smedley)
