This solution is applicable to systems running on a 64 bit Environment
A quick note: if I do not reply to your comment, it’s because I do not have an answer to your particular question.
Yet another quick note: The latest build of Minecraft now has a notice in the Video Settings window that will tell you if you have a 64 bit or a 32 bit processor with a 64 bit or 32 bit installation of Java (Screenshot by rjc34 in /r/minecraft).
My original post posted May 30, 2011:
I recently acquired a brand new computer with an x64 (64 bit) Processor and x64 OS and noticed that even with all the necesseties of Minecraft installed it would still crash. Almost always, Minecraft would just freeze for 5 seconds and then crash with a black screen.
It’s a common issue and most “work around fixes” are setting the viewing distance to anything but far. I searched everywhere for a fix, but couldn’t get a fix for this crash. Sure the setting viewing distance to anything but far would slightly fix the problem but only by prolonging the crash by say 15-30 minutes.
I checked what version of Java was installed on my machine and it was an x86 (32 bit) version. When most install a component such as Java, some automatically think that it’s fit for their system no matter what. If you go to the java download page you’ll see the big red download button, but underneath it says “Not the right operating system? See all Java downloads here“. Go there (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) and download the x64 version of Java and
I uninstalled my 32 bit version of Java and downloaded the x64 version and installed it. I have had Minecraft idling for an hour without a crash and I will update this post when I know for sure that this fixed it.
So if you have this issue;
- Find out if your processor is either 32 bit or 64 bit
Almost every new computer built nowadays is a 64 bit system - If you’re the impatient type like me, uninstall your current java and install the 64 bit
Everyone hates to admit it, but in the midst of things you might have overlooked that you most likely installed the 32 bit version on a 64 bit system. Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and download the 64 bit version for your OS (Windows, Solaris or Linux) - Launch Minecraft
See if Minecraft will run on any rendering distance and play for as long as you like
Please let me know if this fixed it for you, I’ll update this post once I know for sure that it solved my problem. I’ve had Minecraft running in the background while writing this and it’s still running!
Edit: Minecraft hasn’t crashed all day month year, I’ll call this a confirmed fix!
Feel free to share this page to anyone with this problem!

it says for me that it needs a 32-bit java but i have researched several websites saying that 64-bit works for it… any help?
Do you have a 32 bit or a 64 bit Operating System?
Minecraft will run with both 32 bit and 64 bit Java :)
Just download the appropriate Java version (32 or 64 bit depending on your OS) and uninstall the old one and re-install the new one you downloaded.
yes I have a 64 bit OS and I downloaded the 64 bit jdk and then ran the updater because it says i have “not installed” it through the actual launcher… nevertheless it should work with the updater, correct?
It shouldn’t be a problem, let me know if it doesn’t work and we’ll troubleshoot it :)
yeah that is what i’m saying, anyway i decided to just download the 32 bit and the 64 bit both and just leave it like that :P
my texture keeps crashing when i start minecraft
lol
I guess I should really have given more information in my post huh? :P
Well mine was going pretty weird.Everyday sometime in the day Minecraft just fails on me:Minecraft shuts down and leaves a little Paper slip thing telling me what happend.
please tell me how to fix this problem on the reply thingy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:(
Hello,
Can you post, or send me, the stack of crash that you were seeing before switching to 64-bit JRE? We are looking into a crash at the moment and saw your post and would to know if the crash and solution are related to what we are investigating.
Thank you,
Roger

Hello Roger, thank you for your comment.
I’ve since fixed the problem and it’s no longer a problem for me personally. Installing the 64-bit Java Runtime Environment on a 64-bit OS seemed to have done the trick. I haven’t had any problems with this particular application to run since I did this (May 30th 2010).
But if anyone else has Minecraft crashing for them, please feel free to reply to Roger’s post above with your crash message.
hey roger, you are in luck because I had previously sent the error to mojang and they sent back an automated message with the whole thing saying that the message was recieved :D it is:
of course that is with mods on, not sure if thcould help? i never had the error that Andreas had sorry. Ut was for a crash with a few mods that are compatible together and running a mcpatcher activated 256×256 texture pack.
Hello Roger.
I have a big problem:
My savegame world is very large so the java crashes every 5 minutes, but worst of all-
delay between crashes gets smaller and smaller…
now i cant even play for 2 minutes :(
When it crashes it says me that it had ran out of memory, however i have left pretty much space on my local disk, where is the java installed. So can you lease help me somehow fix this problem? please reply.
hey, this was helpful, but how do i stop the crashing if im on a 32-bit system windows? you crashing in the post sounds exactly like what im dealing with… thanks
This is a retarded reply from me, but did you by chance uninstall and reinstall your java runtime environment? I don’t have any machines with 32 bit operating systems any longer :( wish I could be of more help.
Thanks a lot dude. I really appreciate this post, it was exactly what my issue was.
Mark
Glad to be of help Mark!
hello, im having the exct same problem.
i got a 32bit version of win7 on a very fast pc, and still minecraft java crashes every 5 minutes and my CPU OVERHEATS!!!!
How can i fix this?
install 64bit on a 32bit pc??
thanks
Peter
Hi Peter, that wouldn’t work unless you have the capability to run 64 bit applications on your machine. I wish I knew the answer for you but all my machines are 64 bit :(
I did this and I’m still having crashes in the nether with the balck screen of death. Also now minecraft won’t even load in the browser (and I’m running a 64 bit system). Any thoughts?
Hey TinyNinja, sorry it didn’t work out for you, I am afraid I haven’t had that issue personally so I’m out of ideas :/
Fantastic thread. I was running 32bit java on me 64bit windows7. I have to have both versions installed so I can use my web browser but that no prob. U guys have saved me from a world without minecraft and for that I thank you.
This didn’t help me at all :( I mean, this seems to be good advice, judging by all the others that were helped, but mine still crashes all the time.
I’ve got both Java versions installed, but I still can’t play it in browser, nor offline. If I try to scale the window, it freezes, and in the browser, it works for about a minute or so, before Java crashes. I’ll admit my computer isn’t the best out there, but it is built for gaming, so it should be able to run a simple game as Minecraft, right?
hey !!! i want to install buildcraft and if I drop buildcraft core, factory, energy etc on modc or open and than drag and drop in minecraft.jar minecraft crashes. Got some ideas ? please help me …
I’m also getting the crashing every 5 minutes thing. I’ve updated Java but still getting the problem.
Will Minecraft’s memory be deleted if we uninstall Java?
i found if you go into the video settings options and change the render distances to normal or lower it well help or fix the problem
Hello, I hope you can help me with this. I have 3 problems with Minecraft. First, when i open minecraft, it takes 1-2 hours to it open and before it opens my computer fan starts roaming crazy and makes much noise. when my minecraft opens, i can play it 10 minutes and in crashes, or the other thing what usually happens, is that my computer shutdowns automatically. What can i do? I have…
-Windows 7 Home Premium 64bits
-Laptop
-TOSHIBA
-Intel Core i3
-2.13 GHz (Graphic Card)
and yes i have been alot with my computer on sofas or like that where it may have sucked dust. But is there any other ways to stop the overheating/crashing/whatever it is so i could just play minecraft normally?
-MindMemento
PS: thank you for your assistance.
Sounds like maybe your fans are busted or there’s something whack with the cooling, Minecraft should not take 1-2 hours to open (!) and the frequencies of the crashes and the automatic shutdowns sounds like it’s definitely an overheating issue.
hey, can you guys tell me what happend to my minecraft? heres the crash reprt:
Bad video card drivers!
———————–
Minecraft was unable to start because it failed to find an accelerated OpenGL mode.
This can usually be fixed by updating the video card drivers.

Wow thanks so much… i cant believe such a simple fix was the cause for all my minecraft woes! i feel like an idiot lol
Hey, I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, but my minecraft works only with Java 32 bit, I uninstalled the old java (32-bit) then I installed 64 bit one, and I couldn’t open the minecraft application.
It says that minecraft cannot find the Java Runtime, and cannot find an application of java(32-bit)
So, I think my minecraft works only with java 32 bit, by the way I have a cracked version of minecraft, downloaded from BitTorrent.
Please help!
Hello Matthew, it sounds to me like your system should be able to run Java 64 bit, but perhaps the fact that you’re running a pirated copy might be messing something up. I don’t have a pirated copy myself and can’t help you out. Sorry :(
I have windows 7 and i have a 32-bit computer. When i downloaded the 64-bit Whenever i tried to log in to minecraft it would open for like one second then close. Please help
-D’Sean
Hello D’Sean, you can only install 64 bit programs and run them on a 64 bit computer. Your best bet is to uninstall the 64 bit version of Java and install the 32 bit back again.
This solution only works for people that are trying to run 32 bit java on a 64 bit system.
Best of luck!
